MELBOURNE, Australia, (add date here): Concept Health has completed a new purpose-built medical centre in Mooroolbark, Victoria, delivering a 400 sqm healthcare fitout for Mooroolbark Station Medical Centre that transforms a former bank tenancy on Brice Avenue into a fully operational general practice.
The project involved a formal change of use from bank to medical centre, requiring detailed planning, regulatory coordination and a design response that converted an existing commercial premises into a compliant, patient and staff-friendly healthcare environment.
The completed practice includes 10 consult rooms, a procedure room, treatment room, pathology room, reception and waiting area, children’s zone, staff facilities and compliant amenities. Rather than treating the tenancy as a blank shell, the project team worked with the structure already in place, adapting the former bank into a space designed around the practical needs of modern primary care.
For Concept Health, the project reflects the ongoing need for healthcare spaces that are efficient for practitioners, while also creating a reassuring experience for patients. The scale of demand on general practice environments remains substantial, with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reporting 163.5 million GP attendances in Australia in 2023–24.
“Change of use projects like this require much more than a standard fitout,” said a spokesperson for Concept Health. “At Mooroolbark Station Medical Centre, the focus was on creating an environment that works well operationally for the healthcare team while also feeling calm, welcoming and easy for patients to move through.”
The fitout also made smart use of the building’s existing structure. Thick walls retained from the former bank tenancy were repurposed as integrated storage throughout the clinic, improving efficiency across the medical environment.
Visually, the centre was designed to move away from a cold or overly clinical feel. Drawing on Australian natural landscapes, the interior palette combines sage green tones, soft timber finishes and shades of blue to create a calmer atmosphere across the patient journey.
Australian-made products were specified throughout the project, including materials and furnishings from some of the best Australian manufacturers and furniture makers.
